Dr. DeFranco earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry at Fordham University. He pursued his medical education at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He completed an Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at The Cleveland Clinic, a Sports Medicine Fellowship at Rush University Medical Center, and the Harvard Shoulder Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and WomenÕs Hospital. He also completed a European Shoulder Reconstruction Fellowship in France and Switzerland.
Dr. DeFranco is a specialist in sports medicine, shoulder, and knee surgery. He provides non-operative and operative care for sports-related injuries as well as shoulder and knee disorders. As a shoulder specialist, he performs arthroscopic and open procedures for all shoulder disorders including rotator cuff disease, shoulder instability, shoulder arthritis, AC joint instability and arthritis, and scapulothoracic disorders. He also provides surgical care for patients with knee instability (ACL, PCL injuries), meniscal tears, torn tendons, and articular cartilage injury. He has authored peer-reviewed publications in each of these areas. He has worked as a team physician caring for athletes on high school, college, and professional sports teams. He is a member of national and local medical societies.
Dr. DeFranco is also actively involved in raising awareness about musculoskeletal disease. He created the ÒProtect Your Bones and JointsÓ program for the United States Bone & Joint Decade. More information about this program can be obtained at www.usbjd.org.
